Abstract:Objective To evaluate the radiosensitizing efficacy and adverse effects of irinotecan on local advanced cervical carcinoma. Methods 120 patients with local advanced cervical carcinoma were randomly divided into three groups:radiotherapy group(n=40) which were only received radiotherapy, cisplatin group(n=40) and irinotecan group(n=40)which were respectively treated with intravenous infusion of cisplatin(25 mg·m-2) and irinotecan(40 mg·m-2),once a week for 5 weeks. And radiotherapy was given at the same time.local control and acute toxicities were compared between three groups. Results The effective rate was 85.0%,80.0% and 57.5% in irinotecan group, cisplatin group and radiotherapy group, respectively.Compared with radiotherapy group, the effective rate significantly increased in irinotecan group and cisplatin group(P<0.05).However,the difference was not significant between irinotecan group and cisplatin group(P>0.05).The main adverse events were gastrointestinal reactions and hematological toxicity, but all treatments were well tolerated. Conclusion Low-dose irinotecan combined with radiotherapy can improve the short-term effects but was not superior to cisplatin in treating locally advanced cervical carcinoma. The combined treatment results in an increase in adverse effects compared with radiotherapy along, but can be well tolerated.
