Abstract:Objective To discuss the values of ultrasound and X-ray in the diagnosis of neonatal intestinal abnormalities. Methods Ultrasound and X-ray images were reviewed retrospectively in 62 cases of surgically confirmed intestinal abnormalities, including 16 cases of intestinal atresia,13 cases of intestinal malrotation,14 cases meconium peritonitis,9 cases of annular pancreas, and 10 cases of Meckel’s diverticulum. Results Ultrasound results showed intestinal malrotation in 10 cases(76.9%),intestinal atresia in 10 cases(62.5%) and annular pancreas in 7 cases(77.8%).In addition, ultrasound revealed different degree of flatulence in newborn infants with meconium peritonitis.Intestinal abnormalities might be shown but could not be diagnosed by X-ray examination.Neither ultrasound nor X-ray provided sufficient information to make the diagnosis of Meckel’s diverticulum. Conclusion Ultrasound is fairly accurate in diagnosing intestinal malrotation with midgut volvulus and may provide important information for the diagnosis of annular pancreas, intestinal atresia and meconium peritonitis. There is a lack of specificity with X-ray examination for the diagnosis of neonatal intestinal abnormalities.
