Abstract: Objective To compare the clinical effects of esophageal intraluminal 125-idoine seed irradiation stents and general esophageal stents on advanced esophageal carcinoma. Methods Thirty-eight patients with advanced esophageal carcinoma were treated with esophageal intraluminal 125-idoine seed irradiation stents(group A,18 patients)or general esophageal stents(group B,20 patients).Dysphagia score, complications, peripheral blood leukocytes and life-span were compared between the two groups after stent implantation to investigate the safety and effectiveness of 125-idoine seed stents. Results The success rates of stent implantation were 100.0% in both groups. There were no significant differences in postoperative dysphagia score, complications and peripheral blood leukocytes between the two groups(P>0.05).The mean survival time in group A was obviously longer than that in group B(11.6 months vs 6.4 months,P<0.01).ConclusionEsophageal intraluminal 125-idoine seed irradiation stents are safe and effective and can prolong the life-span in patients with advanced esophageal carcinoma.
