Abstract: Objective To analyze the liver pathology of chronic hepatitis B with mild abnormalities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT),and to explore the relationship of gender and age to liver pathology in patients with chronic hepatitis B.Methods Needle biopsy of the liver and histopathological examination were performed in 209 chronic hepatitis B patients with mild abnormalities of ALT.The levels of serum ALT and aspartate aminotransferase(AST) were measured using automatic biochemical analyzer.Serum markers of hepatitis B virus(HBsAg and HBeAg) were detected by quantitative fluorescence assay. Results The levels of serum ALT and AST were 45-80 U·L-1and 45-80 U·L-1,respectively.Among the 209 patients,120 were HBeAg positive and 89 were HBeAg negative. All patients had pathological changes in the liver(abnormal rate,100.0%,209/209),with G1 in 24.4%(51/209),G2 in 36.8%(77/209),G3 in 33.0%(69/209),G4 in 5.7%(12/209),G2-G4 in 75.6%(158/209),S1 in 42.1%(88/209),S2 in 37.3%(78/209),S3 in 13.9%(29/209) and S4 in 6.7%(14/209),S2-S4 in 57.9%(121/209).There were no significant differences in incidences of liver inflammation and fibrosis between male patients and female patients,as well as between patients under 40 years of age and patients 40 years of age or older(P>0.05).Conclusion Chronic hepatitis B patients with mild abnormalities of ALT have varying degrees of disease activity, and the gender and age are not correlated with pathological G grade and S stage.
