Political Pursuit of Merchants in Jiangxi Province in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China——Taking Chen’s Family in Jing’an as the Case
Abstract:In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, with great change of the history, some people of insight advocated saving the nation with "the war of business",resulting in not only the encouragement of the government in industry and commerce, but only its reliance on them. The merchants got official ranks or positions whether virtual or real through such means as donations or rewards,or even stepped onto political stage through various new communities or originations, thus obtaining political benefits. At that time, the relationship between the government and the business circle became vague. The merchants consciously played a role in the new society, but unconsciously inherited the spirit of "the intellectual taking the responsibility of the whole world" and showed their immediate care to state affairs, thus establishing’an indissoluble bond with politics. However, with the changeable political situation, the forms and attitudes for the merchants to participate in politics were also changing.Their political choices showed obvious characteristics of the time. This paper intends to take Chen’s family in Jing’an of Jiangxi Province as the case to study the course of history for generations of Chen’s family to step into the regional political circle through reliance on the official system to do business,to donate and obtain official ranks and positions, playing both the role of businessmen and officials down from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.
