Abstract: As a result of the invasion of the imperialist powers,China became a semi-colonial and semi-feudal nation after the Opium War,and the populaces were in extreme misery.Thousands of people who were forward-looking attended to learn more from western countries.They recognized the importance of newspapers in propagandizing political thoughts,and consciously combined newspaper running with political struggle.They used the publications to disseminate western political trend,initiate the political thoughts of Chinese masses,as well as seeking an "ideal" model of modernizing Chinese society.The press stimulated the debate and expression of public opinion by the populace to participate in political campaigns.Furthermore,the statesman drew lessons from the political movements by discussing newspapers,thus promoting the modernizing process of China.
