Abstract: Grammaticalization can be interpreted as the result of a process which turns content words into function words which have fading meanings and grammatical effect. And it’s also a gradual, linguistic function changing process which mainly displays its changes in semantic, pragmatic, morphological and phonetic aspects. The semantic grammaticalization refers to semantic generalization and decategorialization which involves broadening of meanings. With the comparison of grammaticalization between English and Chinese in semantic meaning,we find that different languages have common grammatical patterns.
