Abstract: Wang Chuanshan is one of the great early enlightenment thinkers of the seventeenth century in China. His thought about ethic spirit of rule by law includes three aspects:he illustrates of the legislation spirit that "punishment should be enacted in detail towards the noble, while propriety should be transmitted to lower level people";he criticizes corporal punishment and denies death penalty, which illuminates humanism;and he advocates the viewpoint of "putting aside the existence of the monarch",which illuminates republic and supremancy of law. Those viewpionts manifest the modern ethic spirit of safeguarding people’s rights, uplifting humanism and illuminating the republic. It is very important to study the ethic spirit of Wang Chuanshan’s rule by law for studying the modern transcomformation of political and law thought of "mingqingzhiji".
